Van der Valk Hotel Sassenheim - Leiden

Nest was our favorite of the hotel’s several dining choices, and breakfast had an impressive range to suit different tastes. Our room was spacious, clean, and well laid out, with everything thoughtfully provided. Staff were friendly, helpful, and cooperative. The location is excellent, and the attractive surroundings added to our stay. My one reservation was the price, which felt a little high for the value. Still, it was an enjoyable, well-rounded visit, and I’d consider returning and recommend the hotel.

We only stayed one night, but had a fantastic time and would definitely return. The hotel is lovely, with two restaurants, and our big, beautiful room had a nice balcony. We ate at Nest, where the food was very good and reasonably priced. The wine service reminded us of Italy or Spain, which was great and unlike most restaurants in the NL. It’s a great location if you have a car, though it can feel a bit disconnected without one. There are bikes available, too. Everything was arranged to make for a wonderful stay.

Breakfast had plenty of variety, but unfriendly, moody staff at both reception and breakfast made the experience worse. Our room’s air conditioning worked fine, yet the hotel overall seemed to lack care for basic maintenance and service. The rooms were clean but quite small. The fitness room was dirty and poorly kept, its air conditioning was broken, and the water dispenser was empty and never refilled. Van der Valk Sassenheim has potential, but its service and cleanliness need serious improvement.

I had a really enjoyable time there. There’s a lovely walk from the train station, and the big hotel has a nice lobby with a coffee bar tucked away in the corner. The spa and casino were great, breakfast had loads of choices, and the lunch menu was really nice too.
