We expected the old city library in Schiedam, where my uncle once worked, to reflect the historic setting and the city where I grew up. It didn’t. The reception area felt impersonal, with large, unrelated portraits of women, and the atmosphere felt off and unwelcoming. Our room was spacious and the bed was comfortable, but the stay as a whole was unsettling. Soon after we arrived, a violent fight broke out in the restaurant beside reception, involving several hotel staff members. The only receptionist on duty seemed overwhelmed. Later, she told us she had resigned on the spot. There was no manager or security staff around, and nobody apologized or reassured us. We felt unsafe enough to barricade our door overnight. When we left the next morning, reception was still unattended, and no one acknowledged what had happened. This was the most uncomfortable hotel stay we’ve ever had, and not what we’d expect from a 4-star Booking.com listing.

The restaurant was a real highlight, with friendly service and very good food. There’s a nice range on the menu, from a filling breakfast to lighter bites and full main dishes, with fresh local ingredients. The hotel itself felt cozy, and our room was clean and looked after well. A comfortable, peaceful place to wind down after a busy day, and a good option for both a meal and a stay.

We’d come back for another short break. It’s an affordable, relaxing place, and the restaurant was delicious and thoughtful about dietary needs. Vegan choices were limited, but what my daughter and I had was tasty. Breakfast is self-service, with a bit of something for most people, and I liked that they make their own honey. The room was very clean, and my daughter enjoyed watching the boats from the little waterside view. It’s a quiet, lovely hotel in Schiedam, not far from the city, with small towns and shopping nearby. Staff were friendly and helpful. There’s construction in the area at the moment, so hopefully that finishes soon and things feel calmer. The hotel itself was quiet, and it was a nice spot to relax.

The housekeeping was the worst part of my stay. I was there for 20 nights and my floor was never swept. One night my sheet came loose and was badly creased; housekeeping was due, so I left it expecting it would be changed. When I got back from work, the duvet had just been put on top, and the bottom sheet was still exactly as I’d left it. The restaurant menu is very limited, the food was good, but it’s closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Breakfast was very disappointing. Reception staff weren’t particularly welcoming, and often nobody seemed to be around. This was a bad choice of accommodation.

Dinner was very good, with reasonably priced Asian dishes, and the staff were polite and helpful. The hotel was clean and comfortable. The suite we booked had its entrance through the terrace, which was unfortunate in the rain. At breakfast there were only four pieces of bacon at a time, so we had to keep waiting for more to be ready.
