It looked beautiful outside, but the place was closed, so we couldn’t see the inside. The area around it was amazing, though.

I couldn’t get inside, sadly, but it’s a beautiful castle.

Beautiful place.

Set right by the Geul River, this is a lovely medieval castle made from Limburg marlstone. It began as a defensive tower within Valkenburg’s fortifications. You can’t go inside, but Den Halderpark around it is open and makes a pleasant place for a historic walk and sightseeing.

The grounds were partly turned into a city park after the municipality of Valkenburg aan de Geul restored Den Halder Castle following the Second World War. Before that, the noble Van Meer family made it a proper castle in the 17th century, after many other families had held the house and courtyard as a fief. Hendrik van Birclaers was granted them in 1381, followed by families including Francke, Van Amstenraede, and Van Eldeborn. The castle stands on the Geul and was originally a representative town residence built against the medieval city wall. Its marlstone core is a rectangular corner tower from the 14th century fortification. The wall tower once had battlements, then was raised by a storey when it was converted into a residential tower. Dirk IV of Valkenburg began rebuilding the city wall in 1335, and further defenses followed in 1464-1465 with four projecting corner towers, including the Halder Tower. The name Den Halder comes from “houder,” meaning the tower was meant to hold back the enemy.
