Asteria Hotel Venray

The room smelled of chemicals, and the narrow beds made it hard to sleep. For a deluxe double, I’d expected a double or queen bed, but we got two singles. When we asked if they could be made into one bed, we were told it wasn’t possible. We’ve stayed at Asteria many times and the staff have always been friendly and helpful before, but that wasn’t our experience this time. Maybe I expected too much.

It could have been perfect, but after an honest mistake on our part, they charged us an extra €40. We booked the room at 11:30pm for a 1am check-in, and staff made up what sounded like a nonsense story about capacity to justify it. Reception staff shouldn’t tell customers things that aren’t true. I’m a Hotel GM myself and could see straight through it.

As a highway hotel, it was okay, and the location works well if you want a walk in the forest. The breakfast was simple but fine. In the morning, the staff were very loud and talked about things that put me off eating. I don’t think they meant any harm, but I prefer a quiet coffee. The pillow was so big that my head stayed at a 45-degree angle all night, and I didn’t sleep well.

The food is very good and fairly priced. The hotel has had some upgrades, and the rooms are much improved.
