Airbnb cancelled the reservation and refunded me, which was a relief. After walking 15 minutes from Zaandam station in the rain with my 55-year-old mother and two large suitcases, we arrived soaked and found the stairs too narrow, steep, and unusually high to use safely. This place just wasn't practical for us. The listing's illustration and description, according to the host, showed steep stairs, but they didn't convey how extreme they were. When I asked why this hadn't been made clearer, I didn't get an answer. The host showed no empathy either. An apology or even an offer to help with the bags would have meant a lot, but there was silence. Airbnb Support, on the other hand, replied quickly and handled things professionally. We found a nearby hotel next to Primark that cost less and suited us much better. Be very cautious if you're bringing heavy luggage, travelling with older family members, or have mobility concerns. Across the 9 countries where I've used Airbnb, this was by far my worst experience. Instead of apologizing, the host left me a review suggesting I was being “princess-like” or difficult. My mother was actually the one who wanted to cancel because of the situation. I never heard a single “sorry,” only criticism. I've attached a screenshot of the host's review so people can judge it for themselves. Very disappointing and extremely unprofessional.

The beds are comfortable, the room and building have a cozy “air bnb” feel, and the bathroom is nice, though small. They provide earplugs, which was a sweet touch, and the price is honestly great. Not having reception is a plus unless you need help. It's a nice area, but about a 9-minute walk to the station. I tried emailing and calling without success. One number I called seemed to belong to a random person, and on the other attempt I couldn't tell if the call even went through, which could have been an issue with my carrier. It was also pretty dusty. Room service should happen daily, but they were a day late. That matters if you run out of something like body wash and have to rely on the bar soap, which could run out too. I'd still highly recommend this hotel if you're in the area or visiting Amsterdam. It's closer to 4.5 stars for me, though the average rating really ought to be higher. With those issues addressed, it would be perfect, and I'd recommend it even more.

My boyfriend was bitten by bed bugs so badly, and I'm talking to Airbnb now to get help. We couldn't find a bug in the room, which is unfortunate because Airbnb is making this much more difficult. I want at least a partial refund, and I want the hotel inspected. This isn't okay. I wish I'd researched the hotel more before booking through Airbnb. The listing for our room had a really high rating and no complaints, but after looking further I've found other reviews from people who were also bitten. The hosts are acting as if this complaint is new to them. Do not book here.
