Bergen Bors Hotel

Being right in the middle of Bergen was the biggest plus. The Fish Market, Bryggen, and the Fløibanen funicular are all an easy walk away, and it’s a handy base for seeing the city. The old building has a lot of character, and the rooms are cosy, though the corridors have steps and split levels that can be awkward with heavy bags or mobility issues. Breakfast was decent, but the choices stayed the same each day, so it could get repetitive on a longer visit. Room equipment seemed inconsistent too: some rooms had a kettle and slippers, while others didn’t, so you may need to ask at the desk. Even with those quirks, the historic feel and central location made for a pleasant stay, especially if you’re travelling light and don’t mind stairs.

The breakfast buffet was astonishing, and I was especially impressed to find a whole section of gluten-free treats. We all loved it. I also enjoyed the book in the room, which explained some of Bergen’s history and how a stock exchange building was turned into a hotel. It pointed out details I’d otherwise have missed. The only drawback was having to haul my suitcase up the stairs at the reception entrance.

The room had lovely furnishings, but it was very small. There was no closet or sofa, just one chair and a small desk, and hardly any hangers in either the room or bathroom. The lamps were very dim, and there were no reading lights or charging outlets by the bed. Although the room had a Nespresso machine, the four capsules supplied at the start were never replenished during our three-day stay. Bathroom supplies weren’t refilled either, and used cups weren’t replaced. The hotel has larger rooms, judging from the fire escape plan, so we were surprised to get such a tiny one despite my World of Hyatt globalist status and the very high rate. On the positive side, the staff were helpful, the furnishings were good quality, and breakfast had a great range, including a high-end Nespresso machine. The location by the Fish Market, right in the centre of everything, was another major draw.

We’ve had a really enjoyable stay. The rooms feel roomier than most places in Bergen, and the service has been excellent throughout. Staff are friendly and helpful, breakfast is great, and the restaurant space has a striking feel with all its art and cultural details.
