Geilo Hotel

The hotel is in a lovely spot in Geilo's valley, with a nice 5 km loop nearby. We were there briefly on an organized tour, and I'd told both the tour company and hotel in advance that I'm vegan. They made me a vegan plate for dinner, though few other buffet dishes worked for me. Our room faced the railway on the second floor, which is the ground floor. It was too hot, so we kept the windows open and heard trains all night. Breakfast was a letdown too: there were no allergy labels, and I had to speak with several staff members to find dairy-free milk and bread. The staff were very friendly, but the food options fell short.

I liked the beautiful Norwegian hotel style. The rooms were clean, the beds comfortable, and the service excellent. The location was very practical.

The rooms are really clean, and the hotel is well located for the train station. In general, I didn't think it was bad, especially for a small ski-resort town. But the hotel's vibe felt odd. It seemed like the staff and people around it had taken on the slow manner of the typical elderly tourist, so everything from reception to staff responses took time. The breakfast buffet was lacking. It felt like a cost-cutting version of what tourists might expect Norwegians to eat. There was plenty of herring and cheese, but not much choice of standard or hot food, such as omelettes or meat. Maybe an elderly guest wouldn't notice the gap.

The breakfast buffet was delicious, and the basement sauna and little gym were a nice surprise. We only needed a reasonably priced place for one night and had no expectations, but the room was clean, the beds were really comfortable, and the hot and cold water pressure was good. Our window looked out toward the road and parking lot, though that didn’t bother us. The receptionist was welcoming, friendly, and helpful. Great value for the money.
