It’s a beautiful place, with a huge, clean ground floor apartment, two bedrooms, a functional kitchen, nice decor, free parking, and a good breakfast. Perhaps it’s a perfect summer option, but checking in off season was almost impossible and came with a lot of stress. We’d told the host our arrival time and messaged through Booking.com, but when we got to the Farm there was nobody there, and the host didn’t answer our calls. After a whole day of traveling, we were desperate. The rooms were unlocked, so we tried them until we found the apartment that looked like the photos, then let ourselves in. Our booking had been paid in advance. Another couple waited for an hour, couldn’t reach the host, and left very angry. Later, other tourists couldn’t get hold of her either, and we helped them check in. It was the most unusual check-in. To be totally honest, the host did eventually contact us, but that was an hour after we arrived and had already got into our room. I don’t mind self check-in, but guests should be given the information beforehand if no one will be there, and the host shouldn’t turn off her phone when guests are expected. Communication was difficult too, because she doesn’t speak English very well.

Breakfast came with a charming ring of the traditional farm bell. It was prepared for the number of guests staying at the time. The portions weren’t unlimited, but there was plenty of food, more than enough. Our stay at Hesla Farm in Gol left us with warm feelings and good memories. The host welcomed us kindly and was genuinely hospitable from the start. She showed us two accommodation options in the barn, both beautifully renovated with modern interiors that went beyond what we expected. The facilities were excellent, with clean indoor toilets and showers. Hesla Farm brings rustic charm together with comfort, and we’d gladly return.

We slept incredibly well, and the hosts were so welcoming. Staying at Hesla Farm was a wonderful experience. The accommodations are unique and keep their history well preserved, while still having the modern amenities you need.

The upper floor apartment at Vaningshuset made for a splendid stay. There’s a lovely 300m walk into Gol town. The kitchen was okay, though I wouldn’t use it for major cooking. Breakfast was a generous spread of American and Continental dishes, and the coffee brewed from Vietnamese seeds was lovely. The owner was warm and very pleasant. I recommend the fish dinner, which came with appetisers, dessert, and coffee. The freshly brewed cold beer was also good! I recommend booking directly through the hotel website to avoid a mix-up. Remember to call ahead and tell the owner what time you want breakfast. The website, Booking.com, and other sites say breakfast is included in the price, and the receipt says so too. Somehow, when I paid for an extra dinner, I was told the rate didn’t include breakfast. I mentioned the receipt, and owner Ligia said there was no need, she just wanted to let me know that the rate didn’t include breakfast.

The historic accommodation at Hesla Farm has the updates it needs, and breakfast was incredible with service to match. We had a perfect stay and experience. The location is great, just outside Gol center. Hope to come back another time. Highly recommend Hesla Farm if you’re traveling near Gol, Norway.
