Quality Hotel Maritim

The rooftop bar is the one bright spot, and it’s a very good place to look for the northern lights. The hotel is remote from the restaurants. Reception didn’t seem to care whether guests were happy, and the restaurant staff made us feel told off for not booking dinner in advance. We hadn’t decided whether to eat there until the last minute, and the restaurant wasn’t particularly busy, so I didn’t see why they made such a fuss. I didn’t appreciate it. Food and drinks also cost more than I expected for what’s basically a pub; we paid over £30 for salmon. I hope I don’t stay here again.

We weren’t hotel guests, but on New Year’s Eve we came in to call a taxi, then waited in the lobby on January 1st after missing our bus to Tromsø. The receptionist working those days was kind and friendly. The location is convenient too. I’d choose this hotel if I came back to Narvik.

My family and I checked into Room 203 at Quality Hotel Grand Royal on December 26, 2025, and it was a terrible stay. It felt like “Quantity Hotel Big Money,” with enough rooms to charge for but not basic service. The room was freezing because the heating didn’t work, and the air conditioning was locked. At the front desk, staff told us they couldn’t adjust it, the warm energy system wasn’t under their control, they couldn’t fix it, and there was no room available to move us to. Nobody came to check the situation. After I asked a third time, they moved me to another room with its own problems: the temperature was barely acceptable, and neither the TV nor the kettle worked. I didn’t want to spend more energy or mood dealing with them. I especially want to warn guests with Asian features that they may well have an unpleasant stay. At that point I just wanted to curse them and hope they went bankrupt and closed as soon as possible.

Friendly, welcoming staff went out of their way to make us feel at home, and the location is excellent. Restaurants, including a good one on site, and shops are all within easy walking distance. The rooms are clean and well kept, basic but comfortable enough for a good night’s sleep. A convenient, no-frills base for exploring Narvik.
