We booked through Up Norway and spent two nights at Boen Gård. The gardens, river, history, lovely accommodation, and fantastic food and wine made us fall for the place. The service was outstanding too. It felt magical, with so much history around. Thanks to everyone at Boen, we really hope we can come back soon.

Boen Gård is a historic farm in southern Norway, in the Setesdal Valley, with roots going back to the 18th century. It gives visitors a look at traditional Norwegian farm life and is now a known tourist destination. Set among hills and forests beside the picturesque Otra River, the property includes traditional wooden buildings such as a farmhouse, barns and outbuildings. Many have been carefully restored and preserved to show the area’s agricultural heritage. Visitors can explore the farm and learn about old farming practices. Activities may include feeding animals, milking cows, or trying traditional crafts and skills, offering a hands-on way to experience rural Norwegian culture. There may also be a farm shop or café selling local food and goods, where visitors can try Norwegian dishes and buy souvenirs made by local craftspeople. The farm is generally open to the public at certain times of year, and guided tours may be offered to explain its history and importance. It’s a good destination for people interested in agriculture, Norwegian culture and nature. Details such as activities, opening hours and access can change, so it’s advisable to check the official website or contact Boen Gård directly for current information.

The rooms and facilities were good, and the service was impeccable. We tried the 10-course dinner and rated it 7 out of 10. The chef seemed to have some trouble balancing the courses. It’s a place I’d really recommend, but keep in mind that it’s pricey: one night with the 10-course meal and four glasses of champagne came to 7,700 Norwegian kroner, around 760 euros :)

There are pleasant walks through the garden and along the river, where we met friendly sheep. Our room was cozy and looked out over the river, and the food was amazing with a great wine selection. They cater to all dietary requirements. It’s costly, but well worth it. I’d love to come back.

The restaurant sits by the river near the forest, in a lovely location. The gourmet food was fantastic, with almost everything sourced locally and turned into interesting, surprising dishes. We enjoyed all five courses, and the wine and juice pairings were excellent. Service was efficient and excellent too. We’ll be back.
