Comfort Hotel Karl Johan

The location just west of Oslo Station worked well for us, especially with an early train to Bergen the next morning. The rooms were pretty standard, though definitely more modern than the other Comfort Hotel chains we stayed at. Breakfast was standard, with plenty of seating.

Our night in room 342 was rough. The bed was very uncomfortable for the two of us, and the ventilation or air conditioning made a lot of noise all night. Then around 6:30 in the morning, a trolley, probably used by the hotel staff, kept going past our room loudly enough to wake us both. We’d only stayed one night with my girlfriend, and even that felt like too much. Our previous stay at the Comfort Hotel at Stockholm Arlanda Airport was much more pleasant, so this was a very different experience.

It’s right in central Oslo, on the main street, and the location works well for a walking sightseeing route of about three hours. I guide a lot of tourists who like starting here and heading to Bjørvika, the Oslo opera, Kok, Salt, Munch Muséum, then stopping to eat in Vippa. From there the route can take in Akershus Festining, Rådhuset, the University and Royal Palace, and finish at the National Museum, where I arrange free passes, or the Peace Prize Museum.

The Sunday late checkout until 6 pm is a great perk, but remember to ask the staff at check-in so they can put it on your room card. The hotel’s on the shopping street, close to the main train stations and other transport, and attractions are easy to reach on foot. Breakfast was really tasty, even though the vegetarian choices were limited. Nice hotel, friendly staff.
