Golden Gate Guest House

We were there with friends during the earthquake last April, and this was one of the few places that felt safe to sleep indoors. The owners were so kind and made sure everyone was safe and happy the whole time. It’s also a great base for exploring Bhaktapur. I’d definitely return.

Good location and a pleasant terrace, but the bedrooms were noisy and there were no services. I booked through Agoda and stayed five nights while the hostel seemed to be having management problems, possibly linked to Covid and the lack of guests. I was the only guest. Booking couldn't be canceled. The decent $14 rooms are only on the top floor, so avoid the tiny, unattractive $9 singles with no bathroom. Room # 115 had a partial view of Durbar square, but noise from a nearby restaurant and dogs barking and fighting all night among the Durbar monuments was intolerable. I moved to the quieter room # 117. There was no breakfast, just an expensive Korean restaurant serving dinner on the first floor, no room cleaning and no bottled water. Airport transfer cost 1200 roupies. When I left, they first refused my credit card payment, although it had been accepted through Agoda, then asked me to pay an extra charge to a neighboring shopkeeper. They also canceled the Agoda booking as a "no-show," possibly to avoid the fees they owed. It was too expensive for what it was. The new management needs to become more professional and honest. In Nepal's low season, it’s much better to come directly and discuss the room and prices than book online.

Really good value, with a clean place in a great spot. It’s close to everything but still quiet, and the rooftop has lovely pagoda views. Couldn’t recommend staying here more!

I had a really good stay here for a lower-priced hotel in Bhaktapur. It’s centrally located but quiet, with a clean room, hot shower and incredibly helpful, polite staff. I’d recommend it to anyone visiting on a budget.
