Avondale Motor Inn

The room smelled stale and dusty, and when I went in after finding an open, dirty condom in the bed, it still had that same smell. They said the room had been fully serviced, but I couldn’t see any sign that disinfectant had been used on the floor or surfaces. Management blamed the cleaner instead of taking responsibility. I asked for towels and was asked why I needed them. The room was dirty, and I found that condom in the sheets even though only my two children and I were staying there. When I showed it to the manager at the desk, she didn’t seem to care and suggested it was mine. I was shocked by the hygiene, especially with children there. I also found a rusty frying pan in the kitchen and asked if she expected me to cook for my children with it. She replied, “is it to much rust”. The desk lady was rude and unprofessional, and ignored my concerns about the appalling room and hygiene. The manager blamed her cleaner, though if the place were managed properly this shouldn’t have been missed. The manager lady said they’d been there 15 years and I was the only one to complain, while the male who apparently owns the place yelled at and intimidated me when I spoke up. He made excuses that they were new and learning. I have a police report because I wasn’t going to accept being treated that way. They don’t have a feedback box or a place to leave written complaints. Please be aware I have photo and video evidence. Do better!

It was a horrible stay, and I wouldn’t recommend it. The milk was off, the shower drain was clogged with hair, and the place looked nothing like the online photos. The TV didn’t work, and there were no lights in the rooms.

The room smelled funky, and there was snot on the wall, dust on the shelves, stains on the kitchen bench and sheets, plus blood on surfaces. The sheets were dirty and there were insects and bugs around. The ceiling lights had mold, and neither the TV nor the AC worked. A really bad experience. Do better!

We booked two nights but the room was so appalling that we didn’t stay at all. When we asked for a refund, they refused. My wife and I travel a lot around New Zealand and overseas, and this was the worst motel room we’ve experienced. There was no toilet paper, ants were crawling around, the unit smelled foul, and the fittings were broken or missing. It seemed as if the place hadn’t been used or serviced for months. You’ve been warned, keep away. It’s a disgrace and an embarrassment to New Zealand’s hospitality industry.
