My car was stolen, and someone contacted me through my Facebook ad saying they’d seen it speeding around the area before turning into this campsite. When I got there, it was on bricks with parts stripped off. I asked people nearby, but nobody knew anything; they were all cracked out. A nice lady told me she’d seen the crew arrive late at night and do burnouts in my car around people staying there. I went to reception to ask for the CCTV footage of the group, only to be told the cameras didn’t work. What great security. The place was full of rubbish and didn’t feel safe at all for an average family.

We drove in and our hair stood on end. There were trashed caravans, rubbish, old mattresses, and piles of stuff everywhere, and we had trouble getting back out, having to drive over trash. The residents scared us even more. This place is a slum and a health and safety risk. Honestly, don’t go there.

I’ve never stayed here and don’t want to. I’m a local, and my frustration comes from the ongoing pollution caused by this camp. A large group of dog owners and I walk our dogs in the adjacent park daily, and the eyesore that is avondale motor camp infuriates us. Residents throw all kinds of rubbish into the Oakley creek area, with no regard for the waterway: household trash, pallets, furniture, green waste, plastic, concrete, and car and bike parts. Whenever someone moves out from the creek side, anything they don’t want seems to get tossed down the bank. We also see fights, bad language, and angry, aggressive dogs tied up there. I can’t understand why anyone would choose to stay here, and it certainly isn’t the four-star stay it’s advertised as in some places. We’ve complained to the Auckland city council many times about the rubbish. Once, a resident cut down a very large tree and let the trunk and branches fall into the creek. A car from the camp was also left in the creek for some time, leaking oil into it before the wreck was removed. I don’t know if this is the right place to vent, but the owners don’t seem to care about the surrounding area. Private homeowners wouldn’t be allowed to dump rubbish into a protected waterway and get away with it.

Maintenance has been neglected, and the place isn’t kept well. It’s now used for homeless people, so there isn’t rubbish everywhere. A powered site still costs $40, which is cheap.

The rooms are old, but reasonably priced. Staff were friendly, pleasant, and helpful. The location is pretty good for getting to places nearby.
