I moved into a filthy place. There was hair in the shower, crumbs across the kitchen, and dirty marks inside the fridge. I raised it with the RA, who agreed it wasn't clean but said it was still livable. She said she'd email my flatmates to ask them to clean, but that never happened. New arrivals are meant to get a professionally cleaned place. Since someone had already been living there, apparently no inspection took place over winter break. Yet in Semester 2, I was inspected and failed even after cleaning thoroughly. They'd called the place “livable” before I had done any cleaning at all. I ended up cleaning the oven, microwave, and fridge, though I hadn't made any of that mess. It also seemed like nobody was going to hold my flatmates or the previous residents responsible, so all the work fell to me. My roommate left for summer without doing anything, and I was told, “unfortunately everything will be up to you.” It felt like the residence made it easy for people to dodge their responsibilities. If someone did nothing and I can prove it, shouldn't they have to pay? After work, I stayed up late vacuuming and cleaning the fridge, shower, and toilet because I had no help. They inspected on my move-out day and made it seem as though I'd done a poor job. I hadn't cleaned junk under the ice bags in a freezer I never used, disposed of my roommate's non-perishables that were there when I arrived before he came back from break, or removed year-old shower stains and dirty spots under the sink and on shelves. None of those were my mess. They were left by previous residents. I feel like I was used as free labor when a professional cleaner should have been brought in before I moved in. I was expected to scrub everything alone after arriving to a filthy place at the start of semester. I'm extremely disappointed and upset. I don't usually write such scathing reviews, but something needs to change so exchange students like me have a better experience in UoA accommodations.
