Just spending time at River Retreat with Margie and Allan was one of the best parts of my South Island trip. They even took care of our laundry, which was so kind. The separate granny flat is peaceful, right by a river, with cows, sheep, and a horse nearby. Inside, it has a fully equipped kitchen and all the comforts you need, plus Margie leaves plenty of food, including her world famous muesli. There are lovely diners close by and a tavern with huge, delicious hamburgers and good home cooking. The stay did my soul a world of good. I highly recommend it, and could happily stay forever.

We slept very well and were made to feel welcome by Margie and Alan. The two room place sits among farms and animals in the countryside. Breakfast was provided, with fresh eggs, bread, milk, several cereals, and homemade jams. A real gem for this area, and I'd gladly recommend staying here.

The room was clean and tidy, and there was fresh milk along with a loaf of freshly baked bread waiting for us when we arrived around 5pm on 19Nov2019. The next morning Allan showed us around his farm, which was great for the children. Margie and Allan were wonderful hosts.

The hosts are especially friendly, and the animals on their little farm are lovely too. The granny pod has everything you need, without extra fuss.
