I’m really enjoying my stay. It’s cheap, vintage in style, and very homely and friendly, with an immaculate level of cleanliness, even if it isn’t flash. The old world building has a fascinating history and survived the Napier earthquake, which happened before I was born. Don’t let its age put you off.

The location couldn’t be better, and the facilities are adequate. We generally had a great time, but which room you get makes a big difference. Our double room facing the sea was amazing, full of light, with fresh air in the morning, and very comfortable. Our travel companion’s tiny room at the back was a bit dusty and had no view at all. If you can, make sure to book one of the ocean facing rooms.

I felt safe and comfortable here as a solo female traveller. The lady running the hostel was incredibly warm and friendly, and my single room had a comfortable bed and pillow, plus a clean, big towel. The bathroom was clean and spacious, and the location on Marine parade is central, right across from a great ice cream shop. My room was next to the outdoor communal smoking courtyard, where people were a bit chatty at night. I needed to leave the window open for ventilation, so it got a bit loud. Light sleepers should choose a room away from the main road and courtyard. The building is a bit dated, but that adds to its charm.

It’s okay for a one night stay, but the interior felt very dated and not homely. The old flooring and wall paint made everything seem dirty, and there was a smell. The bunk beds were uncomfortable and too low to sit up straight, so I kept bumping my head. The power outlets were a couple of meters up the walls, which made charging devices or using them in bed really difficult.

From the room, you can see the sea and the sunrise over the Pacific Ocean. The location is great, and Lisa at reception was really friendly, kind, and nice. The room is small but tidy and enough for two people, and worth the money we paid. There’s no car park of its own, but you can park on the street in front. It’s free for 120 mins, which means arriving at 4 pm lets you park until 10 am the next day without charge. I definitely recommend this place!
