The view is nice, and the accommodation was clean and okay, but I wouldn’t call it five-star. We stayed several days and found it didn’t have what we needed to feel at home. There’s no laundry or cooking facility, and the BBQ we’d been looking forward to was so dirty we couldn’t use it. I was especially put off by someone knocking for a “wake-up visit” at 8 every morning. Maybe that’s meant as hospitality, but 8am is too early when you’re on holiday. For a short stop or an overnight stay it might be fine. I wouldn’t recommend it for longer visits.

The kids loved having the freedom to explore the farm and come and go as they pleased. Ros and Don showed them what farm life is like, which was an amazing experience. Thanks to them for that. The accommodation was superb, and the outdoor setting was beautiful. We’ll be back to see you and all the animals. The place sits on top of a hill with lovely views across Hawkes Bay.

Andy the dog and alley the cat made it feel like coming home, and the owners were so lovely and welcoming. From the deck, the view runs down the valley all the way to the sea, and it’s hard to leave it to go exploring. The lodge itself is just as nice as the setting. The location is a nice distance from town. Thanks, grange lodge, we’ll put this on our list to revisit.

After six years, we came back for a second visit and it was lovely to find everything looking the same. The wood-lined, self-contained lodge still has its big deck, panoramic views over the Esk valley vineyards to the ocean, a well-equipped kitchen and a comfy bed. For two people wanting to relax in the sun, it was ideal. Roslyn and Don welcomed us warmly, and we shared a convivial dinner on our first night with glasses of Don's wine. We also tried the mezzanine, but that steep vertical ladder is a challenge. It’s probably better suited to children or agile teenagers. Thanks, Ros and Don, for the hospitality and more good memories.

A real local Kiwi place, with owners who make you feel at home. They have a farm and vineyard of their own, and are great hosts who know what they’re doing. They also have lots of Napier history to share.
