It was our first stay here, and I’d come back. The price was reasonable and it was very quiet. The building looks old from outside, but inside it’s been refurbished and was clean and tidy, even if it still felt a bit old. We were there over Christmas, when staff weren’t on-site, but we were fine looking after ourselves. Worth a look.

Room 6 was dark and dingy, smelled musty, and had no heating in either the bedroom or bathroom. The windows were overlooked by the back stairs and the neighbours, so there was no privacy. The toilet door also had no lock. We were in Dunedin for three nights for our granddaughter’s graduation. On the plus side, the motel is well placed for the Uni, parking was great, and the bed was comfortable with good shower pressure. Other family members had Rooms 10 and 11, which were very good. I’d warn people against booking Room 6.

The people were lovely and the room had all the essentials. But mine smelled so strongly of cigarette smoke that I slept wearing a mask to avoid waking with a sore throat. I’m sensitive to cigarette smoke, so your experience may vary.

The host was very friendly, and the room was spacious, with a modern bathroom, comfortable beds, and great kitchen appliances. It was an absolute gem, and I’d definitely stay again. Couldn’t have asked for better.

The price was amazing, and they were helpful about giving us a downstairs unit for our girls’ road trip to Dunedin. Unit 1 at Owens Motel was easy to find and in an excellent location. It’s an older motel, but the room had everything we could need. A little musty, yes, but very clean, warm, and comfortable.
