Scenic Hotel Punakaiki

We really enjoyed the setting and the restaurant, especially since hotel guests could use the 50% discount promotion. I booked a rainforest room, but got an ocean view instead, which might have been an upgrade. The view was lovely, though the rooms were a letdown. There was old food left in the fridge, no air conditioning, and the fan was rusty, dirty, and worn out. Our shower was broken and sprayed water everywhere from the hose. The staff acted quickly and moved us to another room, which I appreciated, but it was still a hassle. That room had the same fan problem, and there were tiny dead flies on the bed. It made me wonder how long the room had been empty. Even little things seemed poorly maintained: the lotion holder wasn't secured and fell off the wall. The rooms are right by the highway, so there was some noise too. Beautiful location and very good food, but the rooms need better upkeep.

Being right beside Paparoa national park worked perfectly for our hiking and camping trip. The rooms were comfortable and well kept, and the staff were friendly and accommodating. Greymouth is about 20min away, and there aren't many restaurants or other things to do nearby apart from outdoor activities. That suited our trip well, and we loved staying at Scenic Hotel Punakaiki.

We had a terrace with two chairs and a view over the ocean from our room, which sits up on a hill above the water. The room was warm and nice, with a huge bed and an extra bed too. Dinner at the hotel's restaurant was a pleasure, with excellent food and service and a lovely view. Breakfast was continental, with some extra goodies. Thank you.

Coming back after 18 years was great, and I had a really good time. Thanks to everyone who helped make the stay enjoyable. I also thought $150 for dinner was very reasonable. Honestly, anyone giving this place less than 5 stars is either dishonest, stuck up, or had a once-in-a-decade bad experience.
