Fox Glacier Jade Hotel

There was nobody available at reception, and walking into the room meant being hit by a terrible musty smell. The carpet was wet, and the beds felt damp and awful. For what we paid, we should have been refunded. We had nowhere else to go, so it was either stay or sleep in the car. I don't recommend it.

The room smelled so bad when we opened the door that it made me feel sick. There was a kettle and tea bags, but no cutlery for stirring the tea. I went to reception, only to find the person had left a note for late arrivals. I should've checked the reviews before booking. The reception looks like a small shop and the rooms are almost in the bush. I wouldn't recommend this hotel. It isn't worth the price or the stay.

The room's damp carpet and beds gave off a smell that hit us the moment we walked in. We turned straight around and, luckily, found a lovely room at the nearby Heartland Hotel. They apparently keep rooms available for people who arrive after trying the Jade and leave gagging or nearly vomiting. Heartland was clean, courteous, polite, and professional. They even gave us a significant discount because they were embarrassed by their neighbour. We're very grateful. The Jade looked shabby, stank, and had no service. Booking.com must be used to complaints about the Jade hotel, since it refunded us almost immediately. If this is the only accommodation left in Fox Glacier, I'd keep driving or sleep face-down in a fresh cow pat in a farmer's paddock. I'd prefer either to staying there. NZ govt, get building inspectors to close the Jade down. It's a health hazard, a national embarrassment, and a blot on the landscape.

Our room was small, but at least the bed was comfortable and the wifi worked. There was nothing else, and guests had no kitchen facilities. The bathrooms were shared, with a notice saying they close after 10 pm. The place was run down, dilapidated, and empty. We couldn't get out fast enough. It's overpriced for what it is, and a place like this eats into precious holiday time. We should've read the reviews. Don't stay here.
