Beach Tata - Golden Bay Bach (Tata Beach)

Absolutely vile and disgusting. I visited on a weekday and the beach was so packed I could barely walk. There was rubbish everywhere, and dog poo all over the place. I can’t imagine how bad it gets on a weekend. When I finally found somewhere to sit, people were unfriendly too. Horrible atmosphere, wouldn’t recommend it. I only gave one star because I had to, otherwise it’d be 0/5.

We visited off-peak and had dinner at one of the picnic tables while watching the sun go down. Lovely beach. I can imagine it gets quite busy in summer.

Clear water that’s nice for swimming at high tide, golden sand, and lovely sunsets. One of New Zealand’s best beaches, and we’ve found our new favourite spot!

Tata Beach is a peaceful spot in Golden Bay with the kind of scenery and relaxed feel that make for a lovely New Zealand beach break. The crescent of golden sand is framed by native bush and turquoise Tasman Sea water. The sea is calm and shallow, with a gentle seabed slope, so families with young children can enjoy swimming and wading a long way out. The water also often feels a little warmer than in other parts of New Zealand. There’s plenty to do at the water’s edge. Kids build sandcastles, families picnic in the shade of pohutukawa trees, and couples walk along the shore at sunset. It’s also a good place to set out by kayak or paddleboard along the coast, find hidden coves, or paddle to the nearby Tata Islands. Birdlife is abundant, and the native bush makes a lovely backdrop to the sand and sea. Sunsets here are spectacular, with pink, orange, and purple across the sky, a view that stays with you. The beach feels secluded and tranquil, without bustling crowds or noisy resorts, but it’s also handy for exploring the wider area. Takaka is a short drive away for cafes, art galleries, and a supermarket, while Abel Tasman National Park is close by, with its well-known walking tracks and secluded bays. Tata Beach is a special blend of natural beauty, calm, and family-friendly fun. If you want a break from the bustle and time to reconnect with nature and loved ones, it won’t disappoint. It’s a place for making memories, and one of my favourite New Zealand beaches.
