Mark is a wonderful host, and without him the stay would have been far less charismatic. It feels a bit like staying in his home, which he generously opens to guests. We enjoyed breakfast around the large table with the other guests, who were lovely while we were there. In the evening, people gather and chat around a similarly large table outside. Those communal spaces really add to the charm. One night Mark put on a little barbecue for the guests who were there, a very welcome surprise. We stayed three nights and had an awesome time. The Shady Rest has aged quite a bit and isn’t necessarily beautiful in the usual way, but it has a lot of character. It also wasn’t as luxurious or upscale as we’d expected from the website photos. If you like this very personal kind of stay, this is the place for you.

The bath is enormous, and that jet-powered soak in the evening was a highlight. Days here had their own fun rhythm, from eggs and bacon in the morning to a BBQ later, with a rope swing over eels in the creek at the bottom of the garden. Mark has clearly poured 25 years of work and love into this colourful, playful place. He’s a rare and fantastic person. Thanks for having us, Mark. We’ll remember this stay for a very long time.

Janice made us feel so welcome, and the house is beautiful. We had a quiet, cozy night, then a delicious breakfast in the morning. There were lots of birds around, and a little creek with a few eels behind the house. I’d definitely recommend staying here when visiting Golden Bay or going to see the famous rock.

We only stayed two nights and wished we’d booked longer, with so much to do around the Abel Tasman area. Shady Rest in Takaka was peaceful, with comfortable, homey rooms and everything well appointed. Mark was a great host, making killer scrambled eggs on toast each morning whenever we asked. Highly recommend.

We arrived at 8:30 pm, soaked from the rain and desperate for somewhere to stay, and were met with the warmest hospitality. The house has a really cool vibe, and our room was cozy, quiet, and super clean. Breakfast the next morning was delicious. Such a beautiful, cozy stay. I couldn’t recommend it more.
