Recreation Hotel

I’m in town for work regularly and always stay here. The rooms are great, the food is really good, and the staff are lovely. Megan G at reception and Megan in the restaurant deserve a special mention. Their friendly service makes the stay feel extra special.

We were staying across the road and ate at the pub. The meal was horrendous. My husband ordered a medium-rare steak with eggs, chips and mushroom sauce. The sauce was lumpy and tasted like the flour hadn’t cooked through, while the steak was thin and overcooked. My nachos had mince that was basically bolognese sauce with a few red kidney beans and very little melted cheese. Sour cream came on the side. When I asked for hot sauce, the server said she could make it warm. I had to laugh, because I meant spicy hot sauce. It was terrible. I told the woman who served us, and she laughed and said, “little English.” I was absolutely disgusted. I only ate a few corn chips, then went back to our hotel and was sick.

The restaurant and bar staff were helpful, and check-in and check-out were easy. The rooms have recently been redone and are all finished to a good standard, with quality linens and tasteful decor. I’d happily stay again.

I stopped in for breakfast before work. The atmosphere was good and the service really friendly. The downside is that egg is in pretty much every meal, which isn’t great if you’re allergic to it.
