The staff were helpful, and the room’s controllable air conditioning was a real necessity. The window opened onto the fire escape at the back, which people often used as a smoking spot. I stayed two nights in a private room with a shared bathroom. It did the job, and there aren’t many other budget options in Hamilton, but the place needs updating. The general cleanliness was the main problem. It smelled really bad, the furniture was old and worn, and I found several cockroaches in my room. The bed was on wheels, which made it quite hard to get onto.

Even in a private ensuite room, I found it extremely hard to rest because other guests kept talking loudly, laughing, and slamming doors well after midnight. There didn’t seem to be quiet hours being enforced or any staff stepping in to manage the noise, even though it was disturbing people trying to sleep. The bedding also raised concerns. I found hairs and visible stains in the bed, so I questioned whether it had been changed properly before I arrived. My stay has been very disappointing. At check-in, I was first given a room without windows. When I asked to move, the staff were friendly and happy to find me another room with windows, depending on availability, which I appreciated.

For $80, the single ensuite room was pretty good. It had no windows, but there was aircon I could control, a TV, and a decent bathroom. The decor and furniture are a bit dated, though it was clean and tidy. The manager let me leave my bag in a locked room for two hours before check-in, so I could go shopping while I waited.

The staff were really kind and friendly, and everything I used was clean and roomy, including the kitchen, bathrooms, and my room. A very nice hostel with all you need. Highly recommended 🥰
