Te Mata House

We loved staying in the adorable Cottage at Te Mata House. It's tucked into a gorgeous historic setting, with an original 1850's home, lavender fields, a lovely pool, gym, hot tub, and pastures where horses, four friendly sheep, and a beautiful pig named Delila live. Petting and feeding the animals was one of our favorite parts. Jacquie, the innkeeper, has thought of everything: tasty breakfast supplies in the kitchen, a bottle of wine, bicycles, modern appliances, a cedar hot tub, and cosy linens and towels. My husband and I even photographed the Cottage because we'd like to borrow some of its architectural ideas if we build a getaway in the States. The location is great for Napier, North Havelock, wineries, the beach, and more.

Jacqueline and her family were warm and welcoming, and their home is separate from the guest house, so the stay felt like a private luxury farm getaway. Everything at Te Mata House was thoughtfully planned and well executed, and we'd be delighted to return. It was a highlight of our honeymoon, thanks to both the relaxing, welcoming accommodation and the beautiful surroundings. The property is close to Hawkes Bay highlights such as Craggy Range, Black Barn, and Te Mata Peak, with coastal attractions reachable on a manageable bike trail. Bikes are provided. We sometimes found it hard to leave, with a well-stocked kitchen, pool, tennis court, picnic spots, and Delilah the friendly pig in her fenced area.

Jacqueline was a wonderful host and managed to fit us in at very short notice. The farm and landscape are gorgeous and beautifully maintained, with lovely animals on the property. The cottage was spotless and thoughtfully arranged, with two full-size bedrooms for four, a cosy living room, kitchen, and patio with a hot tub. The beds were extremely comfortable. It's also conveniently close to wineries and restaurants, including Te Mata, Craggy Range, and Blackbarn.

The gardens are remarkable, and waking up among the grapevines was such a treat. Te Mata House is a stunning, well-located property and we enjoyed every minute there. The kids had lots to choose from, including the treehouse, flying fox, tennis court, and pool. Jacqui is an incredible host, and every detail feels luxurious, from the decor and hand-wash to the homemade quince jelly and Nespresso coffee. We'll definitely be back!
