The shared kitchen and lounge are spacious and spotless, with plenty of useful gear: pots, pans, utensils, crockery, cutlery, a toaster and microwave. There’s a nice outdoor BBQ area too. For a break, there’s a small pool, jacuzzi and sauna, and I liked that the on-site pizza place runs from 3-8 pm. Restaurants are nearby and in town, with laundry only a short drive away. My cabin was clean, comfortable and well looked after, with its own ensuite bathroom. I did spot one stray hair in the bedding, but it otherwise felt tidy. The rooms are upstairs and there’s no lift, so bear that in mind if you have heavy bags. The walls are thin and sound travels across the wooden decking, so other guests can be noisy, especially kids running around. It’s just off a busy state highway and a little hard to find at first. On-site parking is limited, though there’s lots of free street parking close by.

For a reasonable price, this backpackers has what you need. The rooms were comfortable and well insulated from noise, and it was nice and quiet after 10 pm. Staff were friendly, and we really enjoyed the pool, spa and sauna. I’d ask for an upstairs room for the view and easy access to the shared cooking areas. Would definitely come back.

A really good stop on our road trip, and we could bring our dog. The pool and spa were great, and the pizza was delicious. Everything we needed was there, and we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay.

The receptionist really made this stay. Our car got damaged while we were there, through no fault of the hostel, and she tracked down who was responsible and got their insurance details without us even asking. She also let us stay in the lounge after checkout while we filed a claim. She was friendly, chatty and had a great vibe. The rooms and beds were nice, everything was clean and organised, and the price was pretty reasonable.

The receptionist was super nice and helpful, but I wouldn’t recommend staying more than one night. The hostel is about ten minutes from the centre and main supermarket. There’s always noise, and I heard other guests having trouble with people taking two beds or similar. The pool and hot tub are outdoors, so in cold, rainy Kaikoura they weren’t usable. Emails only seem to get answered about half the time. There are no lockers in the rooms. You can leave your things at reception, but it isn’t open 24/7. There’s no privacy curtain either, and the sockets are in the middle of the room, so you have to watch your phone while it charges or trust no one will take it.
