Hapuku Carriages

The huge cooked breakfast was delicious, and the dining room is full of quirky collectables. Our hosts were welcoming and very accommodating, nothing seemed like too much trouble. The renovated railway carriage is quiet, comfortable, spotlessly clean, and has some unexpected extras. The detailed, authentic restoration made it a unique and relaxing stay for us.

We loved the trains passing at night, which was a nice surprise for my partner, who loves trains. The place is only 10 minutes from central Kaikoura and right beside the beach, so we took a lovely morning walk to watch the sunrise. Mike and Susie-lee gave us all the local information we wanted and made an excellent breakfast. They also gave us space when we needed it. We relaxed in the hot tub out back under a clear night sky, with a glass of NZ sauv and some bubbles, and saw wonderful shooting stars. It’s a fantastic little slice of paradise for a weekend away.

The beach photo brings back the seals we saw basking there, and we saw dolphins too. Loved our stay and only wish we’d had longer. It was excellent and well worth it.

The carriage was warm and cozy, and we had an amazing stay. Having a relaxing soak in the outdoor bath under the stars was lovely. The hosts were friendly, and the breakfast was amazing too.
