We stayed in the room with the queen bed because we felt safer sleeping there, even though we're friends who would normally choose separate rooms or beds. We didn't feel okay closing any doors after seeing the lock on the other bedroom, and we put chairs in front of the main entrance because the room key looked so easy to pick. We only stayed one night while passing through, and it was one of the scariest stays I've had. That bedroom had three twin beds and a deadbolt that could be operated from the lounge side, but from inside there was only a handle, with no sign of a lock and no way to unlock the door. We weren't given the deadbolt key. There was a window, so I suppose someone could get out that way if the door were locked, but the whole setup shouldn't be there. Our room, number 8, also had an old skeleton key for a lock that seemed easy to pick. When we looked around, the other units seemed to have different doors and maybe different locks, so perhaps they're more updated and better. The room was dirty too: bugs in the lights, rubbish in the dresser, crumbs in the microwave, and a plugged-in refrigerator that didn't work. The layout was odd, with a twin in the lounge, a queen in the main bedroom and three twins in the second bedroom off the lounge. Between the dirt and the lock, this unit felt like something out of a horror movie. I can't recommend staying here.

The overnight stay was enjoyable. The room was tidy, clean and had the expected essentials, with easy access to amenities. It was good value and a useful base for exploring the far north. We didn't have air conditioning, though they supplied two fans. The swimming pool and spa couldn't be used, which was the main reason we booked this motel, and the Wi-Fi kept dropping out.

The owners were warm and genuine, and you can tell they care about guests and take pride in the place. It felt easy and relaxed, thoughtfully run without being overdone. The rooms at Kaitaia Motor Lodge were clean, comfortable and well maintained, with everything we needed. It's convenient for getting around Kaitaia and exploring the Far North, and good value for money. We'd happily stay again and recommend it to anyone travelling through.

Despite a few snags, it was a really nice place to stay and we'd come back. It's close to the shops, with paknsave right next door and a car wash beside it, handy for washing off the car after the beach. The swimming pool was open, though the spa pool room was locked. There was no air con, so the room got pretty hot and we used the two fans from the closet a lot. Wi-Fi was the biggest hassle, especially with two little ones. It wouldn't connect on our phones or the TV when we checked in. We went to the office three times; the young lady reset the modem behind the desk, but it still didn't work. On our last day, the older Filipino lady came straight to our room when we asked again. She was very lovely. After a few tries, we got Wi-Fi on the TV, but still not on our phones, which was fine since the kids could watch YouTube. Check-in was confusing too. We got there from auckland at 2.30pm, but the office was locked and a note said "Lunch 2-6". The young man doing laundry pointed us to the doorbell because the sign said it was closed. The young lady came out after 5-10 minutes. The young lady at reception could do with a shorter lunch break 😆 🤣.

We managed a semi-decent night's sleep after arranging the two fans around the room, and luckily we'd brought a spare toilet roll. There was no extra paper, and once the roll ran out, we really were in the poo. The room had no air conditioning or fans, but a staff member found us some fans after we couldn't get a refund due to the lack of air conditioning. I wouldn't recommend this place or stay again.
