Our main concern was the lack of help during an overnight emergency. The power suddenly tripped in the middle of the night, leaving the whole property without electricity, and there was no emergency number, backup plan, or way to reach the host at the time. It took over an hour to get through to the helpful owner, who isn’t involved in operations. The management company host had left us in the dark and unsure what to do. When we finally reached them, they said they don’t operate 24/7. For accommodation where people stay overnight, that’s completely unacceptable. A homestay needs to protect guests’ basic safety and well-being, and a failure to respond in an emergency, especially with unstable electricity at the property, shows a serious lack of responsibility and preparation. I urge future guests to consider this before booking, and sincerely hope the host takes it seriously and puts proper emergency procedures in place.

We had 14 people at our extended family gathering, and the venue can accommodate 24. It’s tastefully designed, very well equipped, and has great views over Lake Tekapo.

Our group of 19 had a great time at Tekapo Ski Club Retreat. The place was huge, with breathtaking lake views, and conveniently located near everything. It was the best part of our South Island trip. I’d highly recommend it and will definitely book again.

The common room has three large tables, a sofa, a fireplace, and a kitchen big enough for several people to cook at once, so it works really well for groups. The bed was soft and impeccable. There are two dorm rooms that sleep eight each, like youth hostels, and two family rooms, one of which sleeps four and has its own bathroom. There are four or five bathrooms altogether, though it’s best to use two at a time for steadier hot water. When the weather is clear, it’s beautiful. You can see stars at night, and the light around sunrise is stunning. We happened to get heavy snow on our second night, and the roads were covered in white the next day.
