Wonderland Makarora Lodge

The rooms were fine and the location is nice, and the staff are friendly. But the shared bathroom facilities need an upgrade. The common showers were really disgusting, the water wouldn't drain and there was no hot water. The toilets didn't seem to be serviced regularly: the sanitary bins were full and there was no hand soap. The hot water cylinder in the room made occasional noise. The shared bathrooms need work to be usable.

We really enjoyed our stay in the rustic cottages, surrounded by a beautiful setting. The attached restaurant was great for dinner. We had the beef and it was delicious. A very nice place to stay.

The location is lovely and quiet if you're travelling between Wanaka and the west coast, either way. But we booked a ' deluxe' room and found it poorly furnished. It was one of four rooms in a block, and the noise from the adjoining rooms was terrible. The room standard means I can't recommend staying here.

The photos showed a nice kitchen and common area, so the shared spaces were a letdown. The kitchen smelled funny, had bugs, no freezer, and was missing basic things like a spatula and scissors. There were bugs in the dishes too, and only a sponge for cleaning. The shared bathroom was very run down and bare minimum. I didn't dare use the shower. I booked a double room through Booking.com. I did get a room with two beds, as described, but the pictures were misleading. The shared kitchen and bathroom both need upgrading. Wish I'd taken photos.
