About this property
Murrells' Grand View House is an historic accommodation house built in the colonial style by the Murrell family in 1889 near the shores of Lake Manapouri. Owned and operated by the same family for 120 years, the House is steeped in local history, adding to its unique character. The six acres of spacious lawn and cottage gardens provide peace and quiet from which guests may enjoy the magnificent uninterrupted views of Lake Manapouri and the bush-clad mountains of Fiordland. Accommodation is provided in four ensuite bedrooms, each with views and furnished in heritage colonial pieces, and guests can relax in the informal sitting room or on the verandah.

Rob was a character, and we enjoyed chatting with him and hearing about the place's history. His breakfast was just right before our big day. We stayed one night before an overnight boat trip to Doubtful Sound, and the room was quiet and comfortable. The lake and The church for dinner are both a short walk away. They kindly let us leave our vehicle there overnight while we were away.

Rob and Philippa made us feel very welcome, and we loved hearing their knowledge of the area. The homecooked lasagna was lovely, and the brownie dessert with ice cream and berries was a treat. We had a great stay and would highly recommend it. Sandro & Carolien

We had a spacious room with a lake view, and the house has lovely furniture and a history of about one hundred years. Philippa and Rob were friendly hosts. Breakfast included fresh fruit, cereal, yoghurt, croissant and toast, with eggs made fresh to order in any style by Philippa. There's a heater in the room and even a heated bed if it gets cold. The Doubtful Sound departure pier is only a five-minute walk away, making this a good base for exploring the area. The Church Restaurant is two minutes away on foot, and Manapouri Lakeview Cafe and Bar is a 15-minute walk. We recommend both. See my other reviews.

Coming back for our second stay made it memorable, and Rob's hospitality meant a lot to us. We spent part of our honeymoon here 43 years ago, so the guest house has a special place in our lives. It's changed a lot since then, as have we, but it still has a strong sense of history. Manapouri and its nature walks add something special to any visit to the area. Rob was friendly and welcoming, kept us updated with accurate local weather reports, and was flexible about breakfast time. We loved our morning meals in the dining room: fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereal and toast, plus a filling cooked breakfast made to order. The homemade baking and a big pot of tea were lovely too. Our room was clean, cosy and comfortable, with everything we needed. The property is spacious and secluded despite being right in central Manapouri, and we enjoyed the lake walks and sitting on the veranda with a cuppa. It made a great base for Fiordland: the RealNZ Doubtful Sound cruise departure is a five-minute walk away, Milford Sound is an easy two-hour drive plus stops, and Te Anau is 15-20 minutes by car. We had a great dinner there based on their recommendations. A wonderful family-run place that balanced adventures with time to relax. We'd happily stay again.
