VR Auckland Airport

For $84, the night included a free shuttle to and from the airport, so it was great value. The room had a musty smell, though the beds felt clean and fresh. Everything worked, and we had access to a really pretty outdoor area. The staff were friendly and helpful.

The bathroom was the biggest problem. The shower pressure was very poor, there was no warm water, and I had to take a cold shower in cold weather. A hole in the corner opposite the shower and no bath mat added to the disappointment. The bathroom light kept flickering on and off, which made me worry about a possible electrical issue. Finding the place was a bit of a mission for someone from outside Auckland: I searched for the “Aero Auckland Airport Hotel” sign shown on this site, but the sign there had a different name. I also wasn’t told in advance that reception was in the hotel next door.

We paid $72, and it gave us exactly what we needed before an early flight: a clean, comfortable, convenient place to sleep. Sure, the building was run down, but I’m not sure what others expect at this price.

I sat down on the wooden kitchen chair and booked another hotel straight away. The cancellation fee was more than twice the price, so I didn’t bother and told them to keep the money. I’ve stayed in nicer hostels and campsites. The whole place felt creepy and insecure, sitting on a subfloor, though I don’t know if that’s common in NZ. The building smelled of mold, mildew and musk. Hallway lighting was dim or out, some doors leading outside were broken or missing, and the room looked close to falling apart. I didn’t spend time taking photos, but the video and pictures here show pretty much what it was like. The smell in person made it so much worse. I should’ve read the reviews first.
