Maruia Hot Springs

My wife and I spent two days here for our anniversary, and it was just what we needed to unwind and detox. The staff were very nice, and everyone we dealt with was pleasant. The restaurant could use a bit more help with service, though. The food and facilities were amazing. We’ve already told all our friends about the place, and we may stay a little longer next time. Just watch out for the sandflies, bring plenty of bug spray.

The water was lovely, the view was stunning, and the place has some thoughtful details, from the entrance and natural slab wood to the hangers. The staff were lovely too. Still, as a local New Zealand family, I found the cost hard to justify. It was $130 for my daughter and me, with no flexible or family admission options. The timed sessions also felt restrictive, especially in a high-rainfall area where the weather can affect the visit. The soap dispenser and its artificial-smelling soap felt very commercial, more like a shopping mall than a premium retreat, and didn’t match the price. It was a mixed visit, beautiful in parts but disappointing value overall. It might suit people staying on site better, or perhaps overseas visitors more, but at these prices it risks excluding locals. As a local, I’d find it hard to justify the cost.

Even with other people around, it still felt really private. The sauna was so relaxing, and I’d say try at least one of the experiences while you’re there. Lunch was good and worked well for people with dietary restrictions. I had a lovely day at Maruia Hot Springs. It’s a great place to get away from the busyness of the world.

After a day relaxing at Maruia, I had the best night’s sleep I’ve had in months. I loved the new sauna and cold pool, and the new hot pool is very thoughtfully designed. This was our second staff day out, and we were impressed by how much the facilities had changed since our visit less than a year ago. Can’t wait to go back!
