Bonnie Knights Motel

We picked Bonnie Knights because it welcomes dogs, and the room was clean, comfortable, and had good amenities. The owner was nice and gave us a bit of southern hospitality. It’s conveniently close to dinner and drinks on foot, and not far off SH1. Would definitely stay again.

The staff were lovely and helped us get an early check-in. The room was clean and had all the amenities we needed, and it was good value, but the stay was disappointing. The rooms feel quite dated, and the single-use bathroom products seem a letdown in 2025 when refillable ones are an option. I also found a spider in my bed on the first night. The property is close to a 100kmph highway, so there’s noise around the clock.

The staff were friendly and accommodating with our small dog, and I was impressed by the price and room. It’s a handy spot near places to eat, and Nellie’s was great. Dunedin felt much less dog-friendly than Christchurch. Some places listed on dog-friendly sites apparently aren’t, and others expect a dog to sleep in the car or charge an extra $15. Thanks to Jonathan and the team for a great night. We arrived after the restaurant kitchens had shut at 8pm, so we picked up something at the local supermarket to cook. The room had everything we needed for that. It was immaculately clean, the facilities suited us well, and the beds were very comfortable. I appreciated having a fan.
