The breakfast alone was a treat, especially Phillip’s homemade bread and scones with jam, and the eggs he cooked for us. Our ensuite room was comfortable and full of thoughtful little touches that made us smile. Phillip made us feel at home and had everything ready for us. There’s a big kitchen with a lovely garden view, plus a gorgeous living room with a fireplace. The house is beautiful inside and fits naturally into its setting. Outside, the views and birdsong are wonderful, and we even played music at the little kiosk beside the bubbling river. Murchison Lodge felt like a little piece of paradise. It was hard to leave, and I hope we can return.

Philip made our stay especially memorable. He’s warm, attentive, helpful, and genuinely interesting, and his enthusiasm for hosting really shows. He went out of his way to make us feel welcome. The room was spotless and comfortable, with lovely decor, a modern bathroom, and a meaningful name. Shared spaces were inviting and practical. Outside, the garden and peaceful views are beautiful. Breakfast was a highlight too, with delicious homemade bread and jelly. One of our most memorable stops on our New Zealand trip. Thanks for everything, we’d love to come back.

The Fantail room was roomier than it looked in the photos, especially the bathroom. We loved the homemade bread and the range at breakfast. The whole place feels cosy and lovely. I’d happily stay again.

The breakfast was delicious, and the place itself was amazing. I’m already looking forward to another stay, hopefully long enough to take on the owner in a chess game. Five stars aren’t enough.

I’m here right now, Nov. 21, 2025, and everything about the lodge has been excellent. The staff are so friendly, the rooms are clean and really nice, and breakfast is very good. I’d definitely recommend staying here if you need somewhere in the area.
