The Sails has been reliable for me both times I've stayed, even through a couple of years when other hotels around the North and South Islands were disappointing, including places where I have high status and paid a premium. I came back for a second visit in 2026, after some truly awful hotel stays, and still couldn't find a fault here. I've tried five-star chains, boutique places and high-end hotels in several countries. Heather either has an incredible eye for detail or the world's worst OCD. I couldn't find a single hair on the floor. The place is tidy, and you feel welcome and relaxed. I don't know if I'll make it back to Nelson, but if Heather is still running it, I'd stay here again. I may have called you Helen by mistake. You remind me of my lovely chiropractor, Helen, and I feel bad about mixing up the names. About the photos: I took them as I was leaving, so the messy bed was my fault, not the motel's. If it still looked that tidy after my stay, you can imagine how it is at check-in.

Lovely staff and an amazing shower made a brief visit enjoyable. The motel is right in the centre and beautifully fitted out for the price. I really can't fault it, it has earned five stars across the board. Thank you 😊

We stayed one night before our three-day Abel Tasman trip and another afterward, and had a fabulous time. Heather deserves a shoutout for going above and beyond. Everyone we met was incredibly friendly and seemed to genuinely care about how we were enjoying Nelson. The room was spacious, comfortable and clean, and communication was great. After hiking in the rain, we used the washer and dryer, which was simple and convenient. We really enjoyed our stay.

Just a short walk from town and its restaurants, the rooms were clean, quiet and well equipped. The friendly, helpful staff made the stay thoroughly enjoyable. Nelson is a delightful place to stay, and we hope to come back.

After two nights camping in Abel Tasman National Park, it was lovely to come back to The Sails. The bed was super comfortable, and having a big flatscreen TV with Netflix was much appreciated. The room had plenty of useful things, including loose teas, a Nespresso machine, dishwasher and toaster. Laundry service was a big help after we got drenched hiking. Thanks for the warm welcome and comfortable stay 🙏
