Hosking House

Rachel welcomed us and shared useful local information. We stayed in the spacious New York room, and the restored villa has plenty of room for guests, including a shared kitchenette and lounge. It’s clean, beautifully appointed and centrally located, with eating places and other attractions an easy walk away. One thing to be aware of: the bedroom, bathroom and toilet have no intervening door, which some Kiwis may find disconcerting. The driveway parking worked well for us as we were the only guests, and the Council doesn’t allow parking on this busy street.

Ron and Rachel were delightful hosts, and the service was wonderful. The room was comfortable and immaculate. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay in New Plymouth. A five star experience!

Rod made us feel at home right away, and the breakfasts were so good we didn’t need lunch. Our room was comfortable and spacious, with a lovely bathtub beside the bed, perfect for a relaxing soak after a day at Mount Taranaki. They also have an honesty bar with well-priced beer and wine, a nice touch when so many places try to fleece tourists. It’s within walking distance of most sights, including the delightful cricket pitch at Pukekura park and a cracking local brewery, Shining Peak. Just keep in mind it’s on quite a busy road, so it isn’t the quietest spot. That’s why I haven’t given it five stars. A fabulous little B&B in New Plymouth, with a superb host.

The hosts were knowledgeable and obliging, and nothing felt like too much trouble. The room and bathroom were perfectly comfortable, and the breakfasts were perfect too. The location couldn’t be better. This was an experience in itself, one of a kind. I wouldn’t stay anywhere else in New Plymouth, and only wish there were more places like it elsewhere in the world.
