Poshtel

The hotel is quirky and fabulous, right in the centre of town. On arrival, the receptionist welcomed us with real enthusiasm, explained the hotel and town well, then showed us to our room. She thought we might find it noisy, but it was very quiet compared with other big cities, so that wasn’t a problem. Breakfast was a little disappointing, mostly because other guests had made a mess, but we loved our stay anyway.

The staff member was so friendly and had great suggestions for a scenic walk on the way to the penguin colony, as well as for a few odds and ends I needed during my short stopover. The steampunk decor is a bit much for my taste, but it didn’t get in the way of things being functional, so no complaints. The soap and shampoo they provide smell amazing and felt really refreshing. Breakfast was continental style, and the fresh avocados and tomatoes were a highlight. I’m a light sleeper, and both the fridge compressor and the street noise bothered me. Bring earplugs if you want a good night’s sleep.

The interiors and their attention to the decorating details are lovely. They’ve chosen splendid toiletries for guests, too. The breakfast area has a great selection of dairy products and fresh fruit. I’d definitely stay here again if I visit in the future.

We had a lovely night here for our wedding anniversary. The continental breakfast was delicious, and there was surprisingly little street noise for somewhere on SH1 in central Oamaru. The bathroom is small but works well, with great water pressure. The place is delightful, highly recommend staying.
