The Hobbit Motorlodge

We’ll definitely make this one of our regular places for tramping and whatever else we feel like doing in March and April. It’s a brilliant motel in a perfect spot, with nice, airy rooms. The owner was very friendly, and the staff were friendly too. Just a great place.

The only drawback was the rather small bathroom. Otherwise, the kitchenette unit was very clean and tidy, and had everything we needed for our one night stay in early March. We found it very comfortable.

The $10 total for the washing machine and dryer felt wasted, since both were filthy and dusty. We booked the double bunk bed room and came away disappointed. It was cramped, and reminded us of a jail cell, and the beds creaked. Being right beside the toilets meant we heard doors slamming loudly and fans starting every time someone went in. Other reviews say the private rooms are great, so perhaps book one of those instead of a budget room.

The kitchen utensils could use some attention, as finding a decent sharp knife wasn’t easy. That was a small blemish on an otherwise pleasant stay in a lovely setting, with native beech trees the owners planted many years ago. The hosts were helpful and accommodating when my plans changed at short notice, and the prices were reasonable.
