Prince's Gate Hotel

The hot pools weren’t working, so I was offered free entry to the family pool at Polynesian Spa. Beds were comfortable, though the rooms aren’t soundproof. The hotel is beautiful and historic, right in the centre. Service was okay, and they did replace the coffee and soap after I requested room service. Breakfast seemed expensive, so I went to nearby cafes instead, where the food was tasty and much cheaper.

We loved staying in this lovely old building, right beside beautiful gardens, and the food at dinner was amazing. The staff were lovely and looked after us, though one of the managers was very rude. She didn’t seem to know much English and ignored us all night after we tried several times to get her attention. I manage a restaurant myself, and she didn’t seem to know what she was doing. Her co-workers looked frustrated, and I felt bad for them. They need better or more trained management. Apart from her, I’d definitely come again.

I had dinner and the food was perfect. The burger was amazing: a thick, juicy, tender patty with just the right seasoning, and a buttery brioche bun that held together well. Compliments to Chef Annie. Ivy was friendly and accommodating, and the place felt clean and warm, a great setting for a meal.

Construction meant there was no parking or pool available. Street parking was mostly okay, though one day we had to leave the car a good ten-minute walk away. They gave us access to a larger pool nearby, which was nice, but it was another ten-minute walk and not ideal for a quick evening dip. The staff were friendly and fixed a room mix-up at check-in. Our room was small, with no real view, and noisier than expected. We could hear the neighbors a lot, though it didn’t keep us awake. The beds were good, and the historic hotel is quaint and right in the main part of town. A nice stay, but not a luxury experience.
