The rooms are advertised as 'deluxe/superior suites', which is hard to square with what we found. In four weeks in NZ, this was probably our worst room. It was small, Spartan, poorly lit and noisy. There was only a wall hook for hanging clothes. The bathroom cistern ran constantly, and the sink wouldn’t hold water well. The old fridge was so loud I had to sleep with earplugs. We also heard intermittent running-water sounds inside the walls, and there was an electrical outlet right behind my pillow. The advertising felt false. We only stayed because we were doing the rail cart adventure, which was great, by the way. I wouldn’t stay here again and would suggest finding another option if you can.

The rooms were older, but clean and comfortable. The tour itself made up for the rough start. We hadn’t been told that we had to book the night before, and even the compendium said we could book the night before, not that we must. As a result, we went on a full-day tour with the company on an empty stomach. Not a great start.

We paid $150 for one night and arrived around 10:30pm. The room was unlocked, with the key inside. It was clean and small, though the size wasn’t a big deal for us, and it felt outdated. It’s within walking distance of lots of shops, and there’s Wi-Fi and a smart TV with Netflix and other apps. The room gets hot overnight, even with the heater off and windows open. It’s not terrible, but it’s not the flashiest place if that’s what you’re after.

Best forgotten, really. The room had none of the amenities I’d expect from a three-star motel: no table, no chairs and no way to wash dishes.

We were in Taumarunui for a 70th birthday and booked two rooms for one night. The staff were amazing, and we slept well in the comfortable bed. Luckily, there was a heater available on that cold night, and it warmed the room quickly. We’d definitely come back.
