The Lake Motel

The rooms have a fun retro feel, and all the little details took me back to my childhood in the 60s and 70s. They’re spacious and have the things you need, including a stove and fridge. There’s also parking, handy if you have things you don’t want to unpack, and a small garden out back. For clean, comfortable accommodation in Taupo, The Lake Motel is a great choice. The price is very reasonable, and the owners were kind and helpful. We’d definitely recommend it and will come back.

The owner was so helpful. They gave us a map showing places to visit and how to get there, and every recommendation was spot on. We were invited to use the bikes, grill, and outdoor space, though I wish the weather had been nicer so we could’ve enjoyed those more. The 70’s room was beautiful, with gorgeous books, prints, and lots of lovely little details. We asked about beach towels so we wouldn’t use the nice white ones, and were told, “towels are towels, just take them and let me know if you need them laundered.” That was far more than I’d expect from an American motel. It was a genuinely amazing stay, and I’ll happily return on my next visit. I’ll recommend this motel to everyone I know planning to visit Taupō.

The owners were friendly, and the retro decor was delightful. Everything was clean and comfortable. It’s a good walk into town, though taxis are available. The owner recommended the mole and chicken pub up the hill, and it really is excellent. I’d stay here again.

I was travelling alone and felt safe and cosy here, with everything I needed. Tony and Di wee really accommodating and flexible, which I appreciated. The quirky retro style is a big part of why you stay here, and it didn’t disappoint. I’d definitely come back.
