Maxine made us feel looked after, telling us stories and doing little favors each day when my husband and I stayed in the double room in the house. Bob and Maxine are wonderful hosts, and we can’t wait to return and use their place as a base for some multi-day great walks. The hostel has a lovely location just outside town. It’s easy to drive in, or borrow a bike. Bob lights a toasty fire every day, and there are heaps of couches and comfy chairs. The kitchen is well stocked and easy for cooking a good meal. They put out pears, apples, feijoas and eggs whenever possible, and there’s laundry as well. We know Bob and Maxine will take great care of us again!

Feeding the alpacas was my highlight, and the free bikes were great to use. The place is clean, cozy and relaxing, with a washer and dryer, a really functional kitchen, clean bathrooms and surprisingly comfortable beds. Bob and Maxine are amazing, helpful hosts. It’s good value, well located, and felt like home. Hands down one of the best backpackers I’ve stayed in, and I’ve stayed in heaps.

The kitchen and lounge share a great open area for cooking, games, relaxing and meeting other guests. All the facilities are top notch and kept clean. Bob and Maxine check in on you, introduce guests so friendships can form, and have loads of stories to share. This is the best hostel I’ve ever visited. Every hostel in New Zealand should try to match what they’ve built.

We planned to stay three nights, but the owners were so lovely that we added one more. This was the best hostel we stayed at on the South Island, and it really felt like home. It’s a little far from the city centre, so there’s a walk if you’re travelling with Intercity. But free bikes are available to get around, so it wasn’t a problem. Just head out in the morning on your last day, since they don’t like guests using the kitchen for lunch.

Thanks to Bob and Maxine for being such lovely hosts. Their hostel is welcoming, comfortable and homely, and they’re some of the nicest people you’ll meet. They keep everything meticulously clean. The kitchen has all you need, the bathrooms are good, and the fireplace lounge is a great place to relax. I couldn’t recommend staying here more. Tom and Lucy
