Avalon Motel Thames – Wenzel Motels

The pool water was lovely and warm, though I couldn't tell whether it was heated or just warmed by the sun. The unit itself was much roomier than I expected for the cheapest option, with a bedroom containing two beds and another big bed in the main space. It was clean and well set up, with a microwave, kettle, fridge and electric pan, though no stovetop. Air conditioning worked well. I prefer a fan and opening windows, but couldn't find a fan. The TV had Freeview, casting, and the option to sign in to services like Netflix. I liked being able to cast from my own app without putting account details on the TV. I needed a ground floor room near parking and the pool because of mobility issues, and they gave me one. Check-in was quick, and the receptionist was welcoming. The road outside is busy, and crossing from the Waihi direction took me about five minutes, but there was little or no street noise. Some things didn't work out. I asked for pool towels and was told they'd be brought to my room, but they never arrived. There was a good choice of tea and coffee, but no milk at check-in, so I couldn't have any. The bathroom and shower were small, and I couldn't close the bathroom door while inside. The shower pressure was poor, and I couldn't work out the hot and cold settings because either way seemed to give both hot and cold water. Light came through the glass door at night, with no way to block it. The pool access was the big problem. The steps were awful, with a very high second step and no rail. You had to shuffle along to the far end for more steps, and the last one was nearly half a metre high. I had to ask someone who was eating outside to help me get in and out, which was embarrassing for both of us. A handrail would have helped. The place is otherwise great, but I booked mainly for the pool and probably won't swim again.

Maria at reception was delightful, and the room was spacious, clean, and well appointed. Restaurants are an easy walk away. I'd happily stay here again.

This is a great place to stay at the start of the Thames-Kaiarua section of the Hauraki Rail trails. The room was roomy and immaculate, the services were good, and everything worked. There wasn't anywhere set up for bikes, which seems odd given the location, but we had an excellent stay.

We weren't expecting much, but opening the door to a spotless, really spacious unit was a lovely surprise. The kitchenette was well equipped too. Like Thames itself, this motel is a hidden gem and well worth a visit.
