The whole place needs gutting and renovating. The chalet we got was the furthest from the ones on stilts because it had two bedrooms. We stayed one night at coastal lodge after seeing pictures that made it look like a tropical paradise, with the beach just a hop and a skip away. I even cancelled my other accommodation near Thames to stay here. That was a mistake. The first thing we saw was a dilapidated veranda, rusty patio furniture, and steps broken in places, so you had to watch where you walked. Very dangerous. Inside, the worn carpet had mats over it and the place smelled damp and musty. Both bedrooms smelled damp too. The blinds were filthy with years of dirt and dust, and the fan's outer casing had years of dirt on it as well. The kitchen equipment was very basic, and the cooker and toaster were rusty and generally knackered. The bathroom looked nice and the shower had decent pressure, but if you're arachnophobic, showering won't be pleasant. There were dead and live spiders in all the nooks and crannies. The toilet seat didn't fit properly. The mattresses and pillows had no protectors. I made the mistake of looking at them. They were very uncomfortable, the springs had gone, and they weren't fit for purpose. I had to use the laundry because we were flying home the next day, but the machine was noisy and rusty, and only just cleaned the clothes. The person who owns the place just doesn't care. We could have pointed all this out, but we had nowhere else to go. Just DO NOT stay here. This was the WORST accommodation we stayed in New Zealand, and we stayed in a lot.

I was in town for work, and the room was extremely disappointing. At first I thought I had been given a room that someone else was sharing, because the bed was disheveled, as if somebody had slept on top of it. There was no milk, the tea and coffee sachets and the salt and pepper hadn't been refilled, and the toilet roll had only one and a half pieces left, one ripped and jagged. The overhead fan was so noisy it kept me awake. The plug-in stovetop was dirty and rusty, and the carpet badly needed vacuuming. As someone who travels for work restoring power to storm-damaged communities, I found the place deceptive looking, because the inside definitely didn't match the outside.

The sea view was good, with the water across the road, and the location is handy, a short drive from Thames and next door to the Art Gallery. The room was mostly clean, though there were cobwebs in the bathroom. It smelled musty, and the carpet by the bathroom door had clearly gotten wet when the shower flooded. That was basically the guest's error, from not turning the shower head away from the door.

We got a great deal through Grabone. The reception staff were super helpful and friendly, and though the rooms are a bit dated, ours was comfortable and clean. Thames is close, with places to eat just down the road, but the spot is far enough out to feel remote. Some traffic noise is to be expected by the main road, though it wasn't too intrusive. It was a great experience, and I'd consider coming back unless prices went up dramatically.

We rented two lodges side by side for a few days and had a great time in beautiful weather. The location and view were great, and the lodge was nice with enough room. Highly recommended 🙏🏻
