We stayed three nights in a two-bedroom unit and would definitely return. The welcome was warm, the facilities were as expected, and the beds were reasonably comfortable. It's very clean and well presented, with an excellent location. Though it's close to SH1 and heavy traffic, the room was reasonably quiet, and the double glazing works well. The decor is dated, but we weren't looking for a fashion display. If you like cats, Honey, the affectionate resident feline, is very well cared for and has a habit of lying about how recently she's been fed. The weak point was the Wi-Fi. Internet speeds were far too slow, and the TV feed was so poor it was unwatchable. Apart from that, no complaints.

We'd booked a room for Saturday while travelling up from Invercargill for a 50th, but on Friday night there was an unexpected medical death in the family and we couldn't make the trip. As soon as we could reach the accommodation, we explained what had happened. There was no option to rebook for another date, and they refused even a partial refund, despite the booking company contacting them for us. I'm devastated and won't be back. Thanks for your reply, but I believe this was entirely your choice, not something dictated by booking.com. That's also what the email they sent me said.

For one night, the studio gave the two of us plenty of space and was really welcoming. It had what we needed to cook, including pots, pans and cutlery, plus a two-burner electric cooktop. The room was really nice.

The owners came over on Saturday night when the TV stopped working and got it sorted, which was great service. Six of us rolled into town for a two-day cycling tour with six bikes, and the Big House at Anchor Motel fit everyone comfortably. It was warm after a full day riding, and nobody made a fuss about six blokes bringing bikes in and clattering about. It's an older place, but the rustic feel has personality rather than seeming tired. We couldn't fault the stay or the hosts. It made a brilliant base for the weekend, and we're already talking about coming back next year.

I was pleasantly surprised by the water pressure in the shower, and the rooms were clean, tidy and a decent size. The owners are friendly and accommodating, with the heaters on before we arrived and plenty of soft, warm spare blankets in the cupboards. The rooms stayed toasty, though I still enjoyed relaxing on the couch with a blanket. It's an older motel complex, but the rooms are nicely styled, with tasteful art and furniture that fit together well. It's convenient and easy to find, though it's beside the highway and you can hear traffic. I'm a deep sleeper, so that didn't bother me. It's not super upmarket, but for the price I think it's worth five stars. I'd stay again.
