Creel Lodge

The scenery and walks along the river are incredible, and the property feels wonderfully spacious and private. The gardens are beautiful, the rooms are comfortable, and this place feels completely unique. 100% recommended.

We only booked one night and wished we’d had longer, especially with the rainy weather. From the lodge, a gate gives access to the River trail, which we walked. Unit 2 was clean, with big windows framing a lovely view, a large kitchen and all the amenities we needed. There was also a spacious covered sitting area, though it was too cold and wet to use. The setting is beautiful, with gorgeous gardens and huge trees.

Creel Lodge is set in a lovely, established garden with trees and birdsong. It’s an easy walk to the Tongariro River and Tūrangi town centre, and a handy base for exploring the area’s outdoor attractions. We were welcomed by a friendly, helpful host who shared information about local Matariki events and kindly arranged the late checkout we’d requested in advance. Our cabin was quiet, comfortable and spacious. A fresh arrangement of flowers from the garden was a nice touch, and the room had everything we needed for a short or longer stay, plus extras. The kitchen had a full-sized oven, there was an iron and ironing board in the wardrobe, and an electric blanket on the bed. The simple climate control kept things comfortable, with a small heater as well. We slept well and the shower was great. It was a peaceful stay that helped us recharge. We’d happily return to Creel Lodge.

Bugs got into the room even with the doors and windows closed, which made for a disappointing stay. It was just about okay for one night before the Tongariro hike, but I wouldn’t stay longer.
