The harbour is so sheltered that swimming feels safe, and the hosts have made a lovely setup for meals together outside under the stars. It’s a wonderfully calm place, right by the water. At low tide you can walk around to the marina to eat, assuming you can get your heart rate up above the gentle sound of the water.

You can drift off listening to waves lap the shore, and they’ve clearly put care into making bedtime feel special, right down to the linen and the clouds. The whole place was scrupulously clean, and the hosts couldn’t do enough for us. Getting there and unloading was easy too, with safe parking and level access. What a fabulous location.

A great base for summer, especially if you’re heading to Poor Knights Island to dive or snorkel. The hosts were super nice, and the location is great, just minutes from Tutukaka harbour. They also have free kayaks and a stand up paddleboard to use.

Wendy made the quaint, charming units at 36 Steps to the Beach feel like staying in her home. Ours was clean and affordable. It’s a short walk to Tutukaka, about 20 minutes by road or 10 along the beach at low tide, so the marina and eateries are close by.

We really liked the location and had an awesome stay. The garden was interesting, and the utility room was very clean and tidy. I’d highly recommend 36 steps to the beach.
