Wairakei Resort Taupo by Accor

The resort grounds are beautifully cared for, great for a morning walk, and Huka Falls is only a few minutes away. We enjoyed our stay at Wairakei Resort and would happily return or recommend it. Our room was spotless, with new curtains and aluminium joinery, even though some parts of the property feel dated and I’ve seen a few complaints about the rooms. I’m sure Accor will keep improving the standard. Staff were friendly and very helpful throughout. The location also works well for exploring Taupo. Food is basic pub style, and breakfast is simple but enough. More fresh fruit, juice and continental choices would be welcome. The pastries were always served warm, unlike at other places. For a special dinner, Huka Lodge is unforgettable if you’re up for a splurge.

We stayed one night with our two kids, and the front of house staff were lovely, friendly and gave great service. The resort has a cool feel and interesting history, and breakfast was great. It was good value otherwise, though the room was the letdown: very dated, with no air conditioning. The ceiling fan was stuck on its lowest setting, and even with the cheap floor fan from the closet running too, it felt like trying to sleep in India. I’d love to see the rooms refreshed at some point.

The premises are pretty and pleasant, and this is a lovely resort with a historical style. Our standard room was clean, nicely appointed and a good level. There are two heated pools, a couple of jacuzzis, a gym and a squash court. The restaurant costs a bit more, but the service is great. I’d definitely visit again.

My husband and I stayed in a suite in late January. The front desk staff were lovely, although checking everyone in took a while. The room may have been the cleanest I’ve ever stayed in, but the carpet was literally threadbare and bunched up, and the decor was practically nonexistent, very bland 80s. It didn’t feel anywhere near 4 star standard, and was definitely overpriced. Such a sad resort, it desperately needs a makeover.
